Ospreys, the only raptors that dive fully into the water for fish, were nearly wiped out in New England by our postwar use of the pesticide DDT. But we are in the middle of an osprey renaissance, and, thanks to their booming population and outgoing nature, the birds have become a visible presence on Cape Cod and other coastal areas. Ospreys are easy to observe at their large shaggy nests (they are pack rats, filling the sides of their homes with string, plastic bags, and, in the case of one Cape nest, a naked Barbie doll). But if you get too close, they might drive you off with a dive-bombing maneuver and their characteristic warning cries. Because of the way the ospreys defend and commit to their nests, most observers think of them as homebodies. But there is another side to osprey life and another half of the year, during which "our" New England birds become world travelers.

Well if that was a child of mine and the police took no action(the girl was kicked from pillar to post for gods sake)i would lower myself to the level of these scum and knock seven bells out of them and then id want a word with the parents or parent.If the law cant help then im afraid its the law of the jungle.I know people will chide on about im no better than the thugs who did this but im sorry i would not let them get away with it.A sixteen year old and two fourteen year olds on to an eleven year old GIRL,god they are so brave and the parents should be so proud of how theyve turned out.....god help us all. .
Trump has made us look like a nation of parochial bumblers
Money talks; and with people like Trump it bellows and blusters. Why did Alex Salmond meet the Trumpeteers the day before the unprecedented decision to call in the planning application. Well, again, it is quite in order for the local MP/MSP to meet with the people responsible for a billion pound housing development with a nice golf course attached. Was he showing favouritism? Well, if you mean did he favour the development, the answer is manifestly "yes". Did he know when he met Trump's men that the planning decision was going to be called in the next day? Probably not, though I'm sure he knew it was going to be called in soon by Swinney. Had he known the exact timing of the action I suspect he would have rescheduled his meeting with the Trump gang for appearance's sake.

When the author, Margaret Forster, decided on a university, she chose Oxford where she headed with an open scholarship. Her husband, the writer Hunter Davies, who was also from Carlisle, picked Durham University. Another local luminary, the writer and broadcaster Melvyn Bragg, also selected Oxford. None of them could have stayed at home, if they had wanted to, because until recently Cumbria had no university of its own. There was no higher education in the north westernmost corner of England beyond Lancaster, not even a college of higher education, though there was a teacher training college in Ambleside and an art college in Carlisle. This lack in what is a very large and beautiful county stretching from Lancashire in the south to Scotland in the north, and from the Irish Sea in the west to the Pennines in the east had a profound effect on the region.
Microsoft previews MSN Direct for Windows Mobile devices
MSN Direct is an initiative from Microsoft to deliver personalized information as a wireless service. Users can receive instant access to various information such weather and stock updates, as well as various news pertaining to sports, business, and world news. Content is automatically downloaded by the software client via wireless data connection. In a press release, Eric Lang, general manager of the MSN Direct initiative said, "This is the first time MSN Direct content has been made available to mobile phones, and it is a strong next step for the delivery of MSN Direct content where customers have said they need it the most. We are excited about the opportunities this new application will bring to mobile operators, consumers and the industry." The MSN Direct application is free to download and is available as a CAB installer for download.
