| Barton says 2 workers tried to extinguish blaze
The report, filed with the Polk County Emergency Management Agency, details the average daily intake of chemicals at the plant between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2006. It was filed Feb. 20 of this year. According to the report, the facility stores pure ethyl acetate in liquid form and had an average of four units in the facility per day. The report does not indicate the amount that constitutes a unit. Barton Solvents is required to keep local fire officials up to date on its inventory. "At least we know what the chemicals are," said Saylor Township Assistant Fire Chief Scott Cross. "We come out here every year and do tours, complete walk thorough, they show us everything. We see anything we want. You can't ask for more than that." The volunteer department of the township just north of Des Moines covers 17 square miles.
2ND UPDATE: Toy Fair Notebook: Toy Makers Enter Virtual World
Mattel is making Barbie more virtual, while Jakks and Hasbro are pushing further into the pet kingdom. Mattel's Barbie iDesign is a CD-ROM game, where girls can dress Barbie in hundreds of outfits, creating a runway show and a magazine layout that can be emailed to their friends. Barbie made her first foray onto the web last April, when Mattel launched BarbieGirls.com, a Web site that allows girls to combine fashion, music, and social networking. Its core audience is 10 and 11 year olds. Since the launch, the site has accumulated 10.5 million registered users, said Mattel senior brand manager Rosie O'Neill, who spearheaded the site's development. 'It's a way to extend the Barbie franchise,' O'Neill said in an interview. Mattel is targeting boys with Hot Wheels Turbo Driver, a game controller that opens up eight different terrains online.

Fundraiser for nature-based kids program will feature noted musician
Kids and Creeks, a Chico nonprofit that works with schools to promote science education and watershed health, is hosting a fundraiser tonight at the El Rey Theatre. The event is sold out, due in part by an appearance from singer-songwriter Brett Dennen, who was named one of Rolling Stone magazine's "10 Artists To Watch" in its November issue. Kids and Creeks, which says it has provided more than 10,000 hours of community service and hosted field trips for more than 7,000 kids from 60 elementary school classes, ties its efforts into educational curriculum. "Working with some of the standard base curriculum (schools) have to meet, we bring elementary-aged students into the field," Kids and Creeks President Mark Lynch said Friday. "We meet the requirements of the state standards for teaching by doing it experientially.
New take on 'George slept here'
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - Every Christmas, crowds watch the historical reenactment of George Washington and his troops crossing the Delaware. The Houdon Bust at Mount Vernon re-creates Washington in 3-D based on forensic research. Now the first US president makes his on-screen debut as a buff teenager played by New York actor Adam Thompson in a docudrama of his trip to the Caribbean island of Barbados, a trip that historians say not only changed Washington but also saved his life. The year was 1751 when a ship sailed into Bridgetown Harbor with George, 19, and his half-brother Lawrence, 33, aboard. The ship's name, Success, was propitious, for while the island's balmy climate did not improve Lawrence's health as the Washingtons had hoped - he died a year later of tuberculosis - the six-week sojourn helped George's career.
Hair Stylists Promote Breast Cancer Prevention Messages To Clients
Authors of a Brooklyn, N.Y., study say hair stylists might be a good resource for both healthy hair and information on breast cancer prevention. However, it is not clear if learning about breast health practices at the beauty shop has a significant effect on client's health behavior. Hair stylists "are an institutionalized resource in the community and we consider them leaders in an environment that a lot of people come through," said Dr. Ruth Browne, principle investigator of the new study. Women in the African-American community often have a regular source of hair care, but might not have a similar resource for health information, said Browne, head of the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health in Brooklyn. As part of the study, 29 stylists from three Brooklyn neighborhoods participated in two two-hour workshops to learn about encouraging clients to practice three breast health behaviors: conducting monthly breast self-examinations, getting annual clinical breast exams from a health care professional and for women 40 years and older undergoing routine mammography.
Xbox 360 team skipped quality testing of console to beat Sony to ...
Last summer, amidst a flurry of reports from Xbox 360 gamers, DailyTech exposed retailers' estimates that up to one-third of Xbox 360 consoles experience hardware failures within the first year of ownership. Just days after the report, Microsoft extended its warranty to cover the specific hardware failure for three years from purchase. Now, six months later, a supposed Microsoft insider confirms that around 30% of Xbox 360 consoles, most based on the original 'Xenon' design, fail. "It's around 30 percent, and all will probably fail early," the source told 8Bit Joystick. "This quarter they are expecting 1M failures, most of those Xenons. Some of those are repeat failures." Although Microsoft now covers all Xbox 360 consoles for three years against the Red Ring of Death (RROD) – the sign of a hardware failure – there is no specific time frame for the defect to appear.

Tom Bevan at Real Clear Politics notes that Spitzer's climb-down came too late to save his approval ratings: "Seven months ago Spitzer's net approval rating was +23. In their latest poll, it's at -20. Republicans give him a 29% approval, Independents 33%, and even among members of his own party he's only at 41% - a 36% job approval rating over all. No wonder Spitzer cried 'Uncle' yesterday." "If Spitzer's position was truly principled," submits conservative California Yankee, "should it not be worth fighting for to the better end? The truth is more likely that Spitzer's decision is simply unprincipled and poll-driven." .
